pom pom blow out

For my friend Chloe's 9th birthday I decided to make her something for her room.

I  made a ton of pom pom's in her favorite colors and strung them together.

They were really fun to make, but didn't turn out exactly like I had planned...

but she really loved it! and so did gertie

After chloe and her pals played jump rope with it, we hung it over her bed and it actualy looked really
cute! Happy Birthday Chloe!

PHO!

I picked up this pho Hao seasoning at Uwajimaya, a really cool Asian grocery store outside of Portland
(for those of you who don't know) pho is a traditional vietnamese noodle soup, the broth is generally made with beef and seasoned with cinnamon, clove, anise, ginger and allspice. We made our own with veg stock
delicious!

cozy time

It's been pretty cold here in the old NW and to keep warm, Drew and I have been eating a lot of homemade soups (lots and lots). Besides being really cheap to make, the possibilities are endless. Anyway here is the soup I made the other night.  It wasn't totally homemade (I used canned beans and stock) but nevertheless it was delicious and nearly fat free! Add a bottle of 2 buck chuck and you've got your self the perfect winter meal.

4 cups vegetable stock
1 16 oz. can chopped tomatoes and there juice
1 large carrot, chopped
2 stalks celery with leafs, chopped
1 med sized rutabaga peeled and chopped
1 small yellow onion, diced
2 cans white beans
1 bay leaf
2-3 sprigs fresh thyme
garlic to taste I used like 4-5 cloves (grated)
pinch of chili flakes
salt and fresh ground pepper

saute the carrots, celery, onion, rutabaga in olive oil until almost tender.
add stock and the tomatoes then grate the garlic and add the bay leaf and thyme.
simmer until rutabaga is completely tender, about 15 min
last add the beans, salt & pepper, cook until warmed through. (make sure if using canned beans you drain and rinse them!)
you can pour over rice or barley or just eat with some crusty bread.

I hope you guys are staying nice and cozy!

we are!

salty love

The other day I went up to NE Portland to visit the meadow, a great little shop specializing in artisan salts, fine chocolates and flowers as well as local and European wines

the salt by far takes the cake, you would not believe how amazing these salts are! with over 50 to choose from you can easily spend an hour tasting all of them. this to me was the best part. between the smoked salt, infused salt, black salt, and the salt stones for cooking, it was awesome! this place rules!

drew and i went home with five different salts including Hawaiian black lava, Maboroshi plum (pink) and a pungent black truffle, yummmm

fish heads

these were taken on our trip to gulfport mississippi, when we decided to feed the gulls our assorted viscera from our shrimp and craw fish boil  (after drew "sucked the heads"). It was like a scene straight out of The Birds, needless to say it was horrifying.

lake lunch

The day before I left Nevada, my mom, sister, aunt and I had lunch on the lake, we found this great place on the south shore that was right on a pier. this place was awesome with mostly organic/local food  including a cheese and fruit plate with local raw honey and the best bloody mary on earth. afterward we walked down the pier it was absolutely gorgeous we will definitely be going back to the blue water bistro!
